PROJECT: INSECT TRAP

PROJECT GUIDE:Mr.Ajith S R (PGT Biology)

EFFECT OF THE ODOUR OF DEAD CRABS/CHICKEN WASTE IN TRAPPING RICE BUGS

Hypothesis: one day as I was walking through a paddy field in my village I saw a dead rat with so many rice bugs sucking the juice out of it. It was the milking season of the paddy crops and there was a huge menace of rice bugs. So I thought that the rice bugs may be attracted to the odour of other organisms like dead crabs and chicken waste which is also easily available. So using this property of the rice bugs I devised a apparatus to trap them. My theory was found to be true.

Construction: The device is an outdoor unit which has to be installed in paddy field. The basic components of the device include a wooden frame fixed on a stand, net stitched in a hollow conical shape with both ends open . The larger hole of the net is fixed on the wooden frame and the smaller hole is connected to a metal pipe which is inserted to the cap of the plastic jar .The dead crab/chicken waste is put inside the jar. An led bulb is fixed in the centre of the bottom of the jar which is connected to a battery. The whole jar is covered with black paper so that the light comes out through the pipe o   The device uses a simple technique of letting the odour of the waste and the light to come out to the pipe. It attracts the rice bugs which travels through the frame, the net and finally through the pipe and into the jar. After it enters the jar it doesn’t come out because it doesn’t have any intelligence. After 2 or 3 days  the waste is replaced. About 100 bugs can be caught in a single system .The rice bugs are then killed by some mechanical means
